Itchy Puppy!

Scratchy EmmeJust last week my pup, Emme, starting SCRATCHING! Scratching her legs, feet, sides. Itch, itch, itch! I started to feel really bad for her, she seemed to be itching non-stop.

Previous to this, she had never had any issues like this, so I started wondering what was up. She had been in the lake several times, and I wondered if she picked something up from there. Or did she have fleas? Was she scratching mosquito bites (they are AWFUL this year). Was she having an allergic reaction to any new treat? I ruled out all of this, and decide it must just be allergies, as they have been very bad this year for all of us.

After doing some reading on our website here, I decided to try getting Emme some supplements that might help her itchy skin. First, I bathed her with some Itch Stop shampoo. I have used this in the past with an itchy Irish Setter, and loved it not only for the great job it did, but also for alleviating the itch. Next, I picked up some Omega 3 treat supplements, as well as some Vita-Coat liquid supplement (we’ve also had a lot of shedding). A good mixture of Omega-3’s and Omega-6’s I hoped would do the trick!

GOOD NEWS! Emme’s scratchy behavior soon became less and less, and I think the shedding is starting to lessen as well. She seems comfortable now, but if I notice the itching start up again, I’ll take her in so that her veterinarian can take a closer look.

Many dogs suffer from itchy skin, especially during allergy season, so hopefully this post helps out some other scratchy pets!
