Kitten update: Cosmo the Bengal finds his place

by Melissa R. on June 7, 2013

Pet me I figured we were due for a Cosmo update! My last update was back in January, so we have a solid 4 months to cover. Our Bengal kitten, Cosmo, was introduced to our family in October of 2012. He will be a year old at the end of June and is really settling into things.

Cosmo is really quite the kitty! We really love him, and he’s got us wrapped around his little paws quite well. Our other 3 cats, while sociable and loveable, often can’t even find it in themselves to get off the bed to come say hello to us when we get home from work. Cosmo, on the other hand…. When I walk in the door, he’s typically sleeping on the couch, or his bed on top of the dog crate. He picks his head up RIGHT AWAY, and starts hollering at me to get over there and PET HIM! He REQUIRES much petting. He instantly starts to purr and is such a love bug. If you stop too soon, he will let you know by meowing at you. Sometimes this takes quite awhile!

He is a bit of a loner, but only because he chooses to, I believe. Occasionally he’ll be found sleeping in the bedroom with the other cats, but not often. He will sometimes sleep in the bed at night, but only if we don’t move much – he won’t tolerate being moved, so he usually heads off to his own bed or the couch, or cat tree.

We do see him and our younger male cat, Ritter, playing quite often. They get along well, and if Cosmo is going to sleep next to any of the other cats, it is Ritter. Our oldest male, Kai (he’s 11) – pretty well ignores Cosmo, but if he wants to snuggle up he will let him, as Kai is always looking for somebody to keep him warm. I have seen them playing nicely together a few times though as well.

Cirrhi, our female, simply doesn’t like Cosmo. Cosmo knows this well. They have established their boundaries and have kept well away from each other as much as possible. They don’t fight, just Cirrhi swats at him if he gets too close.

Cosmo LOVES water. Every morning when I fill up the dog water bowl, I leave the water on a little bit for him, and he plays and plays in it – coming away simply drenched!

With spring finally here, he has discovered he would very much like to go OUTSIDE. We do not allow our cats outside, unless they are on a leash or contained somehow. So, he’s not really going outside as he wants, and is quite vocal about letting us know this. It is funny… but not at 5am when I am outside with the puppy, and he is meowing VERY LOUDLY inside, expressing his distaste for the situation!

Watching Cosmo and our puppy establish a relationship has been quite something – I do hope that in the future they are able to be real buddies. I simply can’t get over how he just sits there and lets the puppy chew on his ears and put his head in her mouth! But he doesn’t seem to care. He is a tough little thing I guess!

It’s always something new with all these pets in the house. I am looking forward to seeing how Cosmo enjoys being outside on the deck in our Tunnel of Fun!
