Why We Love Our Pets!

by Melissa R. on August 25, 2011

Recently a friend of mine had to have her dog put to sleep. It was very sad of course, but made me grateful to have a healthy dog and three very healthy cats I could go home and hug! It also made me pause to think about just WHY we love these critters so much. So, I asked our Drs. Foster & Smith Facebook family why they loved their pets, and it was such a wonderful response I wanted to share! Reading all this just makes me happy.

Below is just a SMALL SAMPLE of the reasons why we love our pets… Enjoy!

  • Rhonda S. – I love my dogs because they can eliminate the effects of a stressful day with a simple wag of their tails.
  • Sharon S. – I have three 4-legged-hairy children. I love all of them because they think I am a much better person than I actually am.
  • Jennifer M. – I love my dog because he’s the most hilarious creature on the planet. He makes me laugh even when he’s just sitting there, staring at me (probably hoping silently for a treat).
  • Patty T. – I love my mutt because she among a NUMBER of reasons she is the best running coach! On the mornings I don’t feel like dragging myself out of bed, she is there to nudge and lick me and not let me slack!
  • Sondra B. – They give me hope just like Ellie hopes every day that she is going to catch that elusive tail.
  • Leah V. – No matter what kind of day I have, my sweet dog is always so happy to see me when I get in from work – she makes me smile and is the light of my life!
  • Jeanne C. – I love my pet because she is always glad to see me no matter what I look like or how I am dressed or if I have even brushed my teeth yet.

And besides… Who COULDN’T love these faces!?

Is there any other reason than wet doggie kisses?! Life is complete with them!

Ryan Cole August 25, 2011 at 10:13 am

I love my fish because they interact as much as any other pet i’ve own. My mixed reef needs constant care and the rewards are just as great when you spend time with it.

I love Shelby because she is energetic and devilish and keeps me on my toes every second. I love Megan because she is so smart and eager to please. I love them both because they so obviously adore me no matter what I do.

I love my PandaRoo, and still love my passed LittleBear and Dolly. When I am having a bad day she knows it and either brings me her ball to play fetch, or snuggles up with me just so I can hug her and cry into her fur. Some days she is my rock, and everyday she is my best friend. Doesnt matter what happens in life, she is the only one that will love me without question.

I love my Great Dane because he never ceases to make me laugh. I could be having the worst day ever, and all I have to do is look at him when he’s asleep, sprawled out on his back, legs straight up in the air, his big floppy ears and big droopy lips resting contently on the floor, and he instantly brings a smile to my face.

I love my English Bull Terrier because he’s beyond smart and yet a clown. When he wants a cookie he will let you know he wants it now! He will steal my husbands socks and hide them so he cant find them, hes got a big ol face that just melts my heart and has since he was 7 weeks old (now hes just grown into it)

I love my dogs because they make me smile. In the wintertime they are a blanket of warmth on a cold day. They are my loyal 4 legged friends who sit next to me to keep me company and to watch over me when I am not feeling well. They are my play friends who encourage me to engage in activities such as throwing the ball and hunting for the squirrel who is hiding in the yard. They are my walking companions and no matter what time of day I ask them to go for a walk they are always ready. They are the most dedicated and I am so lucky to have adopted them.. On the other hand, I think they rescued me!

I love all my 4-leggeds (2 cats,2 dalmatians and a german shorthair pointer) for uncountable reasons…they love me for who I am..they do not judge and most of all…when my 17 year old son left for the Military last summer…they were there for me…and they still are…they keep my mind off things, while still remembering their “big brother”…when he came home on leave, they all welcomed him with “open-paws”…they are my other children!

My three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have been constant companions and have seen me through a lot with the death of my husband and mother just a few months apart. Their sweet faces, warm dark eyes and wagging tails kept me focused and grounded through the most difficult times. I still have my adored spaniels and am now paying back their devotion by fostering Cavaliers in Rescue.

I love all my furkids (5 of them!) for so many reasons, but I love my 12 year old lab Molly for one very special reason that I don’t share with the others: she is a certified therapy dog, and I love her for being such an amazing, loving, special girl that she is able to bring joy and comfort to those in need. At 12 years old, she still adores going on visits, and with each visit I come to love her more just watching how amazing she is with others and how happy she makes them.

Amber August 25, 2011 at 4:49 pm

we’ve got a lot of pets and a lot of reasons to love them, but our buff tabby Butterball is especially special. he’s a very loving, nurturing, gentle cat. he always gets excited when we bring home new foster kittens, because he loves “playing daddy” and grooming and snuggling with them. he wants to be friends with every cat he meets, even if the feeling isn’t mutual. he also loves crawling under the covers with us at night.

I love my dogs because they’re my family, my friends, my comedians, my heart warmers. They make me laugh, they inspire me, they are conversation starters with other people. My dogs are a delightful part of my life.

Deanna August 26, 2011 at 8:49 am

I love all my pets (cats, turtle, bird and hamster) so much… they give an unconditional love like no other.

Paula August 26, 2011 at 8:49 am

I love my dogs because no matter what mood I’m in they still love me. They are the only ones who ALWAYS know when something is wrong and come to my rescue to comfort me! They always give and never ask for anything in return!

monica August 26, 2011 at 8:50 am

I love my dog because no matter how bad of a day I am having she always makes me smile. I don’t know where I would be without her. she is such a joy and funny to watch when she starts to play. her and my brothers dog are like two peas in a pod

Molly August 26, 2011 at 8:52 am

I love my Manchester Terrier, Branson, because he’s always wagging his tail and happy to see me. Every time I look at him I melt into butter (he’s a never-ending ball of cuteness!) … and he’s got the most adorable and innocent ‘I love you, mommy’ eyes!

Jessicca August 26, 2011 at 9:09 am

On the worst of days, they keep me going. Geoffrey snuggles into my arms to hug away my stresses and Sophie never forgets to come running with a toy in her mouth and patiently waits with her tail wagging for me see the humor in her little face and laugh my troubles away. They love and admire me as their caregiver, protector, and friend. This is why I love my pets!

Brittany Wood August 26, 2011 at 9:21 am

I love my dogs because of how loyal they are. I love how they make me feel, the unconditional love pets give is just amazing to me!

I adpopted “Clarence” the retired greyhound only weeks after my sheltie passed away. My previous dog was a handful (of course that doesn’t change our love for them)! Even the greyhound rescue could not get over what an easy fellow “Clarence” was. “Get in the car” – ok. “Go in the crate” – ok. While the other dogs that just came from the track were howling in their crates, “Clarence” was laying on his back with his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth! Who couldn’t love a dog like that ? 🙂

Jill Butler August 26, 2011 at 9:29 am

Why do I love my dogs and pets. They are always there when I need to talk to someone, they never judge, they look at you with understanding eyes and give the needed kisses. I got my rabbit one week before my mom passed away from a friend who knew I needed something special to get me through. We adopted our first dog 7 months later on my moms birthday. I carried one dog and 2 rabbits cross country on my move. Since then I have lost all three of my travel companions. I now own 2 whippets that stand by me most of the time. I donot know what I would do with out my heart and soul friends. I have been devistated in the last 2 months with 2 friends who have lost their dogs ages 3 and 14 months to cancer, too soon. Please hold your pets tight each day and tell them you love them

We love our American Eskimos so much ! They are so spoiled but thats why we get up every morning! They offer love and devotion! Our boys are all grown and have moved away! They are now our fury children! We take them everywhere with us!One of our Eskies is now an agility dog ! There is so many reasons why we love them,we would never be able to cover them all!!!

Alysa Collis August 26, 2011 at 10:02 am

I love my pets because they are never anything but themselves! They love me for me, and they understand when they’ve been rescued. Fostering dogs has so many rewards, but we can’t just foster.. We have to keep adding to our own family! It’s wonderful to see all their happy, furry faces around our house every day.

Larry Kinnett August 26, 2011 at 10:22 am

I love my furry child Venus because she loves me unconditionally. She is there with me everyday. She is my constant companion and goes almost everywhere with me. She always has a smile and a nuzzle for me. She knows when my day needs a cheery spot and is there to provide it. She is a constant form of entertainment and does not complain, unless I need to throw that Frisbee one more time. If I do have to leave her behind, whether it’s been from 10 minutes or 10 hours, she is just as ecstatic to see me. And she has the most beautiful face in the world! She is my very best friend.

sara wilkes August 26, 2011 at 10:35 am

I love Pepper, our Shih Tzu , because he always has a smile for me (his underbite looks like he is smiling). He makes me smile when we plays fetch and will not return the ball but wants to be chased. He always seems to know when I am upset or stressed and wants to be close to me. He calms me and loves to sit on my lap.

Rosemary August 26, 2011 at 11:20 am

I love my pets simply because they exist. Even when I am fed up with them for doing things I don’t want them to do (as in “Use a litter box, not the sink!!!”, or “Don’t bark at the mail lady!”), and don’t particularly LIKE them, I still LOVE them. Same goes for the human members of my family, and with two autistic kids, there times I don’t like either of them (like when it’s meltdown time).

Mary Beth Roberts August 26, 2011 at 11:55 am

I love my pets because they give me unconditional love. If I am tired or unhappy one if my digs seems to know and cuddles up to me just to be there. They don’t make demands when I come home tired from work. They don’t talk back when I am trying to get things done. They give the best kisses and nudges when I seem to need them the most. They just seem to know what I need when I need it. Love with a wet nose and fur.
