It’s a Team Effort!

One of the surprisingly fun things about working here at Drs. Foster and Smith is the opportunity every department has to go work in the warehouse during our big sale times…like right NOW with our biggest sale of the year this month and next! Everybody pitches in to fill pet supplies orders. That may not sound like fun if you are an IT or Marketing or Creative Department person, but it is!

We are all working to help our customers get their orders on time and in good shape, so it doesn’t matter what department a person is in or what one’s role is, we all get scheduled to help.

I’m a trained “taper” by now, having spent many hours in what is called “QC/Pack” at the tape machine, putting corn starch peanuts in boxes, closing the lid and running the box through the tape machine. (Watch the video of me in action!) Even though I head up Internet Marketing and Media for the company, some of you who are reading this blog have gotten boxes that I taped up! Love it! We are all part of the customer service team here at Drs. Foster and Smith.

Speaking of “corn starch” peanuts, you may not be aware that such things exist. Most folks think of Styrofoam when they think of the packing that comes in their online orders from other places. Not here. Several years ago we went to corn starch peanuts. They are both environmentally friendly and pet friendly. Corn starch peanuts look like Styrofoam peanuts, but they are kind of like Cheetos without the flavoring! Run water over them and they melt! Wind blow them into your yard? No problem. The first rain will wash them into nothing. Your pet eats them? Not a concern at all. They are just made of corn. Cool!

It may not be normal at other companies to have office staff out helping fill orders, but we are located in the northwoods of Wisconsin in the “whatever it takes to get it done” world of down-home people that make Drs. Foster and Smith a great place to work. So when the sale orders start rolling in, we all roll up our sleeves to help out, so that—to steal a familiar phrase from Larry the Cable guy—we can “Get’er done!”

Oops, time to head to the warehouse to pack some of your boxes. Maybe I’ll sign my name on the next box that goes out….Hmmm, that’s a lot of boxes….

My son found another use for corn starch peanuts. He “decorated” the window in our back door with a “finger paint” creation using partially disolved peanuts. Evidently, he would take a handful of peanuts, stick them in the dogs’ water bowl, and them smear them on the window. A litte note, after they dry and bake in the sun for a couple of hours, they are the dickens to get off of Plexi-glass. Other than that, they are great.
