June Agility Update: We Have Ribbons!

New Ribbons!

New Ribbons!

This past weekend my dog (Mocca) and I packed up and headed to an AKC agility competition a couple hours south of us. We headed out the door at 5:30 am, and arrived in perfect time at 7:30 am. Sadly, it was POURING rain… Only a quick jump outside for Mocca to potty and back in the car she went while I tried to find the umbrella in the car! After several mad dashes to the course building, we were finally set up and ready to go. The competition was delayed slightly due to some technical issues, but was finally under way about an hour later. (What a bummer, I could have slept in an hour longer!)

Our first course was Jumpers With Weaves. This is Mocca’s favorite, and we were just one Q (qualify) away from getting her title in this! The course looked pretty easy to me, but likely this is just because at our weekly classes our trainer makes Jumpers courses so insanely hard, anything else is a piece of cake.

After waiting out the 75 dogs before us, we finally were able to run the course. It went really well! I was worried because I wasn’t able to get in a good long walk with Mocca to tire her out a little, but she did wonderful regardless! We ran fast, and clean, and earned not only 1st place, but our Excellent Level Jumpers With Weaves TITLE! Now we can start working towards our Master Agility Champion on this course.

Our second course was Standard Agility. The biggest challenge for us. The course was tough, but not too tough. A few twists & turns but not bad. I had some concerns about the Teeter because Mocca has been a little hesitant on them at class lately. I was also worried about if I should push or pull her from the weaves to the tunnel near the end of the course. I worried so much about this I jinxed us I think (this seems to be a habit now… worry about one part and then get so worked up about it I mess it up). Mocca got turned around in the chute, and was out of place coming out of it so we got an Off Course after that as she went past me before heading back to go over the A-Frame (Poor Mocca!! Not her fault!) Next, we missed our weave entrance (common for us), and then of course at the part I was worried about…. I totally spaced on what was after the weaves! Dangit. I should have just committed to either a Push or Pull and not worried over it. Aside from this, we ran really well though and Mocca had a terrific time. Enjoy the video of this course below:

We are looking forward to our next competition in July! Stay tuned.

Congratulations on the Q! Looks like she was having lots of fun. And wow, 75+ dogs in one class? That seems like a lot to me, but maybe that’s normal for Agility? Obedience and Rally (at least the trials I’ve been to, admittedly just a few) don’t have that many. I’ll probably see lots more at our next trial, though, the Houston Kennel Club on the 22nd, which is a regional qualifier for the National Obedience Invitational.

I’ve got her in Beginner Novice (hope to get her title), and Pre-Novice. Pre-Novice is a non-titling class, and is all on-leash (including the Recall), but it has the group excersises of the Long Sit and Long Down. In Novice, after the Heel on Lead and Figure 8, everything is Off-Lead. The group excersises are done with the handlers standing on the other side of the ring, which she is NOT ready for. Anyway, I’m hoping to meet other mixed breed owners there. Most of the people I’ve met so far have been nice, but to meet other mixed breed owners would be great.
