The Fish That Didn’t Get Away!

by DFS-Pet-Blog on July 1, 2010

I am the proud grandma of a Golden Retriever, Maxx. He has been a part of our family for over 8 years. Maxx lives in Eau Claire, WI with my daughter and her family. He loves to come “up north.” The minute he is out of their vehicle, he either goes into our lake and swims or searches in vain for a fish to catch.

For years, Maxx has been unsuccessful in catching anything but weeds and twigs until this past weekend! My neighbor’s granddaughters were fishing off our dock and putting their catch into a bucket on our dock. We were watching them from our deck and Maxx was right there… waiting for that perfect fish!

We noticed Maxx was hanging around their bucket but didn’t think anything about it until their oldest granddaughter yelled that Maxx had eaten one of their pan fish!!! While the fish was not that large, he consumed the entire fish! I started wondering how “sushi” was going to settle in his stomach. Maxx seemed quite proud of himself… he finally “caught a fish!” We told the girls to cover their bucket so Maxx could not help himself to any more fish and they did.

Unfortunately, raw fish did not agree with Maxx. He got sick a couple times the next morning but is doing just fine! Lesson learned here… always cover your fishing bucket if your dog is nearby as eating raw fish is NOT a good thing for your best friend. I love sushi but I would not knowingly feed it to any pets!

Here’s a fish story that I gew up with. Years before I was born, my family lived in Beaufort, South Carolina. The house that they lived in had a decorative pond in the yard, where my Dad would keep his bait fish until he could go to the beach. One time, he put in a five gallon bucketful of fish. Then, one of their cats, Pussyetta, lined up her whole litter of kittens, and showed them how to catch fish. She would put the tip of her tail into the water, wait until a fish came close enough, then reach into the water with her paw and flip the fish out onto the grass. My Dad said he watched her catch every single fish, and all he could do was laugh about it, because she was so smart.
