Ferret Favorite – N-Bones

by Keri K. on May 4, 2010

Ferret N-BonesN-Bones are without question one of the most popular ferret treats. They’re a huge hit with my business of two, and all three of my previous ferrets loved them as well.

Not an actual bone (or an “N,” for that matter), ferret N-Bones are pliable, chewy sticks made from protein and gelatin. I’ll usually cut one in half so that my boys can share, though they will happily gnaw down a whole one each… just like this:

Ferrets love stuff they can’t have, especially chewing on and eating things they shouldn’t, like foam and rubber. N-Bones have a texture that invites safe chewing. And I’ve found that a ferret will sit patiently on my lap and chew until it’s all gone, which can be as close to snuggling as I get with my youngsters!

I usually hang around when the boys are happily snacking, just to make sure everything goes down smoothly and to break up squabbles over who got the bigger piece. The treats are totally edible, so there’s no worry about your ferret biting off too big of a piece and it becoming an obstruction.

Some ferret owners (and the manufacturer) report that giving N-Bones regularly will help keep teeth clean, but I personally don’t rely on them for dental health. I just give each ferret one or two a week for fun – remember, they’re still treats, and should be given accordingly.

Once I open a package, I transfer the N-Bones into a clean jar for storage. They stay soft and bendy that way. Too much exposure to air tends to dry them out a bit, so be sure to re-seal the bag.

One last great thing about N-Bones… they’re cheap! I counted a baker’s dozen in my last package, and the current price on them is $1.99.

Other similar chewy toys include Super Fries and Super Chews, which have also been appreciated by my fuzzies. What’s your ferrets’ favorite treat?

Mine love these too! Just make sure to keep the ferrets within sight. I had one of my little ones try to take it and run. The end that was hanging out of his mouth got caught on the carpet and was forced down his throat. Luckily I was right there to pull it out.

I agree. One of my ferrets once bit off a small piece and got it wedged in the roof of his mouth. I noticed he was rubbing his face, so I scruffed him to check what was up. As soon as I saw the chunk he managed to spit it out… and immediately grabbed it back up again to finish eating. That’s only been one instance in dozens and dozens of N-bones, luckily.

I have never ever heard of these N-Bones, are they a very american product?

My ferrets love frankie ferret treats, they are these dark reddish colour and bobbled on the top of them, we have one ferret who tries to trick us and will take the treat go away and hide it then try and rejoin the ferret treat queue pretending his is a different ferret! He is so cute.

Thanks for the info on N-Bones!
