134th Annual Westminster K.C. Dog Show – February 15-16, 2010

**Guest post from Matt S.**

On Monday, February 15, 2010, Westminster Kennel Club will write another chapter in its storied history with the commencement of its 134th annual dog show. Only the Kentucky Derby tops the Westminster dog show as America’s longest continuously-held sporting event. As the club boasts, the show pre-dates the invention of the light bulb, the automobile, and the game of basketball!

Westminster FeatureAt this year’s dog show, I have the privilege of providing special Westminster insights and photos for Drs. Foster and Smith to share with their loyal readers, fans and customers right here on their blog. I will also be making regular updates to my Twitter account, @DFS_Matt. I will be ringside for the entire event … beginning at the time the doors open Monday morning until Judge Elliott Weiss selects the 134th Westminster Best in Show winner late Tuesday night.

Additionally, on February 13th, I will be attending the Westminster’s pre-show benefit banquet for their charity, “Angel On A Leash.” I plan to take readers and followers behind the scenes in the grooming area, into the stands of Madison Square Garden, and even down onto the show ring floor as the dogs compete for the sport’s highest honor.

As a life-long fancier in the sport of purebred dogs, I will attempt to use my experience and knowledge to give readers and followers a special look into this event. My history in dogs include breeding and raising Collies for over 20 years. I have written for numerous pet publications and websites on dog-related topics and I have appeared on Animal Planet’s television show, Faithful Friends, discussing such topics as selecting the right breed for your family and identifying a reputable dog breeder.

I was a professional dog show handler for a number of years, winning multiple Best in Show and National Specialties awards before hanging up the leash to become an AKC-licensed judge. On Friday, February 12th, both my wife and I will be judging the pre-Westminster Collie specialties in Bristol, CT before traveling down I-84 & 684 to Manhattan for the kickoff of the Westminster festivities.

I hope this journey will provide everyone with a special look into this truly American event. Please watch here on Drs. Foster and Smith Pet Blog (or sign-up for the RSS feed updates), and follow me on Twitter at @DFS_Matt.
