Daisy Mae is a Boston Terrier Puppy
On break one day, my co-workers and I saw a note on the bulletin board here at work for Boston Terrier puppies. We joked on the way back to our desks that one of us should call and adopt one of those cuties. My family had lost our dachshund, Copper, a few months back and had not yet been ready to welcome a new dog into our home. Still, they were adorable and I knew the breed fit most of the characteristics that I preferred in a dog. I decided to call my husband to get his thoughts on it.
This is how the conversation went:
“Hi Honey, there is a posting about some puppies here at work.”
“No.”
“Don’t you want to know what breed?”
“No.”
“They are adorable.”
“No.”
“Well, ok. I just thought I’d let you know about them.”
Sigh. “Ok, if you REALLY want one…”
“I’m not sure I do yet. Anyway, I’ll talk to you later.”
He called me back a couple minutes later.
“I’m not so sure this is a good idea, but if you REALLY want one….”
“That’s ok. They are cute, but maybe it isn’t the right time yet.”
And that was the end of it…..or so I thought.
Later that evening, I get home to find out that my daughter is not talking to her father. Knowing that she is a teenager, this is not a big surprise, so I took a deep breath and asked her why she was upset. I was completely shocked when she told me that he told her about the puppy that we “were not going to be getting.”
Wait….say that again….he told you about the puppies? This called for a family meeting.
We discussed the pros and cons about having a new puppy. My husband kept saying “Maybe….” His only worry seemed to be about potty training, as we both worked during the day. So we talked about crate training. This would work as hubby goes home each day for lunch. We talked about responsibilities of pet ownership. My daughter rolled her eyes at least twice. (We do have four other pets.) At some point while I was listing the reasons why we shouldn’t get a puppy at this point, my husband said, “Ok, let’s get one.”
Total silence. We all looked at him.
“Let’s get one,” he said again. My daughter quickly handed me the phone.
Two days, a few phone conversations, and numerous hours of researching Boston Terriers later, I met the owners and picked out a wriggly little female.
Boston Terrier Fast Facts
- Very intelligent, easy to train
- Small but sturdy: 10-25 lbs average size
- Short, easy-to-care-for coat
- Sensitive to tone of voice
- Friendly with strangers, children, and other animals
- Rarely, if ever, bark
- Snores and snuffles due to short snout
We were going to call her “Maybe.” This name came up because of the numerous times my husband had said this during our family meeting. It just didn’t feel right though. When at the store, looking at harnesses, my daughter picked out a pink one with flowers on it. She thought they looked like daisies.
Daisy….hmm….
And so, Daisy Mae had a new home AND and new name.
So far, all of the other pets get along with her, even the two cats who can barely tolerate each other. It looks like we were all simply waiting for Daisy to come along to fill the void in our home and hearts.
Now, about that crate training………. (to be continued.)
