**Guest post from Matt S.**

Last night I had the honor of attending the “Angel On A Leash” Annual Best In Show Benefit. Angel On A Leash is a charity of the Westminster Kennel Club. The event took place at the Affinia Hotel in downtown Manhattan, just a short walk from Madison Square Garden where the 134th Annual Westminster Dog Show will take place in a few short hours.

Angel-On-A-LeashAngel On A Leash is a charity whose mission is to have their “Angel On A Leash” champion dogs working with therapy dogs in health care facilities, schools, rehabilitation, hospice, extended care, correctional facilities and crisis intervention. Through advocacy, education, research and service, Angel On A Leash promotes the role of human-canine bond in enhancing human health and quality of life.” It is truly a noble cause.

In attendance this evening was the 2009 Westminster Best In Show winner, “Stump” (Ch. Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee, Sussex Spaniel) with handler Scott Sommer. Also in attendance were a number of Westminster’s past Best in Show winners, including 2008 Winner “Uno” (Ch. K-Run’s Park Me In First, 15” Beagle), 2006 Winner “Rufus” (Ch. Rocky Top’s Sundance Kid, Colored Bull Terrier), and 2001 Winner “JR” (Ch. Special Times Just Right, Bichon Frise). In addition to being Best In Show winners, all of them are certified therapy dogs and regularly visit hospitals as a part of the Angel On A Leash program.

The ANGEL therapy teams regularly visit some of the most prestigious health care facilities in the country, including the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York, the Ronald McDonald House of New York City, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, Memorial Sloan Kettering Carter Center, and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, just to name a few. The effects of these visits upon the patients are simply amazing. If there were any questions about the power of the human-canine bond, the documentaries on the visits will lay aside any doubts.

The association with Westminster brings an amazing amount of exposure to this wonderful organization. The 2008 Best in Show winner, “Uno”, has traveled the country as an ambassador of the charity. He made an appearance on the NBC Today show, met President Bush at the White House, and threw out the first pitch, along with Angel On A Leash President, David Frei, at MLB games in Milwaukee and St. Louis. He also visited military heroes at the Walter Reed Amputee Patient Care Clinic.

As a part of the evening’s events, Angel On A Leash recognized the generosity of Drs. Foster and Smith and their customers. Drs. Foster and Smith began working with David Frei and Angel On A Leash as a part of their 2008, 2009 pet television series, Faithful Friends.

Through their work with David and exposure to the Angel On A Leash charity, the pet supply company developed a tremendous amount of respect for the charity. From that respect, they decided to create a promotion for their customers that allowed them to raise and donate $52,760 to Angel On A Leash in 2009.
