75-gallon planted aquarium
Female Discus laying eggs
One of my co-workers, Louise J., who happens to be the lead designer for the Foster and Smith Aquatics catalog, has a beautiful, 75 gallon planted aquarium in her office. Housed in her tank are a variety of Fancy Guppies, Rainbows, Tetras, Sidthimunki Botia Loaches and Flying Fox. The stars of the aquarium are three beautiful Discus (Symphysodon sp.).
Louise has been out this week and my office-mate Kelvin has been tending to her aquarium. He walked in this morning to feed the fish, and wouldn’t-you-know-it …. The Discus were spawning on the Romanian Castle! Not wanting me to miss the blessed event, he popped his head in the office & said come look! We’ve kept an eye on them throughout the day, and the mom is now gently fanning the eggs to keep them oxygenated. It’s so cute … she’s a good momma!

We called our photo studio & asked them to come over and snap a few pictures so we could share it with you. We’ll be sure to follow up with additional photos if we’re able to hatch the eggs.
Have any of you had luck breeding Discus or other aquarium fish? If so, please share your story below.

Update!
The eggs didn’t hatch, but that doesn’t seem to get the discus down. They’re spawning again right now as I type this. We’re crossing our fingers for them.
We should have taken a picture of half the department crowded around Louise’s office door to watch! They’re such beautiful fish.
Thanks for sharing this. I’d love to see a photo or two of the whole aquarium if you get the opportunity.
I’d love to add an image of the full tank for you LAbbot. It should appear later today. The plants have filled in quite a bit more since the picture was taken, but you’ll get the idea. Thanks for the interest.
Thanks! It looks great. I always see discus with the same tank mates (cardinals, rummy nose, maybe cories) so this mix of fish sounds interesting. I thought rainbows would be too active for the discus and I thought guppies would be a snack.
We haven’t had any trouble with the Rainbows that I am aware of. They all seem to keep to their own areas (except at feeding time, then its every “fish” for himself!). As far as the guppies, I think some of the fry begome a tasty treat, but the adults don’t seem to interest the Discus all that much.
They’re at it again! Stay tuned for further details!
