Krieger Gets a New Home

by Tina C. on January 4, 2010

Months ago, I received a Aquabetta fish bowl and set it up on my desk at work. It was really tiny and only held about a half gallon of water, but it was perfect for a desktop location.  I went over to our Retail Store to choose a Betta to inhabit it.

Betta-FishThat day there were a large number of Bettas that had just come in. Most of them were red or orange in coloration, but I have always preferred blues. At the far end of the row, I found a beautiful little guy that was mostly turquoise with a red/black face.

After getting him settled, I was a bit stymied on the name. The name had to suit him perfectly because we would probably be together for a couple years.  He was quite an aggressive guy, posturing and flaring whenever I came close to the bowl. I soon settled on the name “Krieger,” which means “warrior” in German.

Krieger is an absolutely joy and will come up to me and flare at feeding time. His home wasn’t very large though and a lap around the bowl took only a few seconds. I decided that he would be happier in a larger aquarium.

I liked having him right on my desk, so I looked through the different desktop aquarium kits that we carry. I am a minimalist-type person, so I really like the looks of the Picotope. This would give Krieger a home six times larger than what he had before. In an economy where people were downsizing, Krieger was moving on up!

Krieger’s new Picotope home meant that I needed more gravel and more than one little plant for him to perch on/hide under. I purchased one tall plant that would block the flow of the filter a bit as Krieger was not used to the new movement of the water.  I made sure to put in his old plant too. Since his new home is larger, I would be doing partial water changes weekly rather than a full water change. Bettas like very clean environments, so I got a small gravel cleaner that I can use to remove waste.

Krieger seems to be much happier in his new spacious home. He is very active and enjoys swimming through the flow of the water filter. Every morning when I come into the office, he goes up to the front left corner of his home to get his daily meal. I would definitely recommend this type of aquarium for any Betta owners.
