Must be Something in the Water

by Tina C. on December 17, 2009

A few years ago, I bought a Drinkwell Fountain for my cat, Gypsy. She pretty much ignored it and kept drinking out of the dog’s water bowl, so I had packed it away on a shelf to try again sometime later.

Recently, we welcomed Kitty into our home from the local Animal Shelter. Kitty had a rough few months before she met us. She was a stray in the winter and had lost her ears to frostbite. We did pamper her a bit – ok maybe a lot, but she certainly earned it.

One of her little quirks was jumping into the bathtub and meowing at the faucet, demanding that someone turn it on for her. We thought it was cute at first, but it soon became quite a nuisance.

I remembered the Drinkwell Fountain in the closet, and brought it out to try it since she liked running water so much. It was an instant hit and now the bathtub faucet was no longer good enough. She will not drink out of any other bowl, and stands in the kitchen complaining loudly whenever it is being washed.

The funniest thing about the fountain is that Gypsy, who previously turned her nose up at it, has also found an interest in it. This may be the only thing those two can agree on.

I have the fountain set up on a side table that both cats can reach easily. The other day though, I caught Karma, my lab mix, lapping at the flowing water. I think it may be time to upgrade to a model with a larger reservoir. Now instead of turning on the bathtub faucet a couple times a day, I am refilling the fountain.

There is certainly something about that flowing water that has both cats mesmerized. They both sometimes sit in front of the bowl, peering in to the water as if waiting for something to happen.

Fresh, running water also encourages your pet to drink more. This is especially helpful for cats or dogs with urinary issues that need extra hydration.

I have a fountain for my ferret that likes to play in the water and it’s something that he can’t tip over. But I do have to set the fountain on a large tray to catch the water he splashes. It’s also important for ferrets to keep hydrated especially with illnesses

Thanks, Susie. The fountain is definitely good for many types of pets. I have a braided rug underneath mine to catch splashing water.
