Agility Competition Day 2

by Melissa R. on September 14, 2009

Whew! What a weekend! This was the first time we competed on both days of a competition. So both Saturday & Sunday were all agility for us. This was also the first time we competed in the “Open” class, and were quite nervous about it. The novice courses were really easy for us, and we got our three Q’s needed to advance out right away. Up to this point, we had never HAD a no-qualify, so I was certain it was about to come.

Here’s the rundown of Day 2:

Standard Agility Course, Open, Sunday:

The last jump!

The last jump!

After our trouble with the A-Frame on Saturday, I was doubly worried about it. Added onto the fact that the course was tough, and a trap laid by the A-Frame, I wasn’t very confident we were going to make it through this one. There was a Tunnel entrance right next to the A-Frame entrance – a lovely trap. So off we went to run this one…All in all it went great! Mocca ran beautifully and I directed her well. Unfortunately, she was all-too-interested in the Tunnel, and would not go up the A-Frame at all. We tried four times, then finished the course. Worst part was this was the second to last obstacle – aside from that we would have Qualified. I guess we need to be happy we did a good job on the rest of it, and not dwell on that part.

Jumpers With Weaves Course, Open, Sunday:

I was hopeful for getting another Q in Jumpers this day since we ran so well the day before! The course was TOUGH – lots of twists and turns! I plotted my course and had it down pat because I knew it was going to be a challenge. We started off well, had a little trouble with another tunnel entrance, but not too much – continued on a great course, until we came to another tunnel and Mocca didn’t go in it when directed. I tried again, and again she missed…This meant two refusals for us, and a No-Qualify….but on the third try she hit it and we ran the rest of the course great. Very disappointing because we had done so well, but again, I need to be happy with the rest of the course!

So all in all, only 1 Q out of the weekend. I guess it is a good thing we went both days. I enjoyed meeting lots of new people and new dogs and it was definitely a beneficial trial in that we learned quite a bit! Don’t you know we’ll be practicing our tunnel entrances & traps now!

Thanks goes out to Camp Bandy in Amherst Junction, WI, and the American Belgian Malinois Club for putting together a great trial.
